OMV Petrom has completed the installation of 384 fast-charging points across Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, concluding an electric vehicle infrastructure project supported by European Union funding.
The charging network spans 92 locations along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridor connecting Bratislava, Budapest, Oradea and Cluj-Napoca, supporting cross-border travel for electric vehicle drivers.
Network Installed Across Three Countries
Romania accounts for the largest share of the new infrastructure, with 304 charging points installed at 74 locations.
In Hungary, OMV Petrom deployed 28 charging points across seven sites, while Slovakia received 52 charging points at 11 locations.
The project was delivered by a consortium led by OMV Petrom together with its subsidiaries OMV Hungária KFT and OMV Slovensko.
The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) also participated in the initiative.
EU Funding Supported Investment
When the project was announced in 2023, OMV Petrom said it planned to install more than 400 high-power charging points, each capable of delivering 150 kilowatts of charging power.
Although the completed network totals 384 chargers, the company said the project fulfills its objective of strengthening electric vehicle infrastructure along an important European transport corridor.
The project carried an investment value of approximately €40 million, with up to €12 million provided through grants under the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
According to the company, the initiative supports the European Union’s objective of building an interoperable alternative fuels infrastructure to facilitate cross-border electric mobility and reduce transport emissions.
Company Sees Continued Need for Public Support
Radu Căprău, Member of OMV Petrom’s Executive Board responsible for Refining and Marketing, said the company has expanded its charging network significantly over the past several years.
“We have rapidly scaled up our network, from about 120 charging points in 2022 to around 1,500 today across the region.”
“We are Romania’s leading mobility provider, and this project strengthens a key transit corridor, helping make electric mobility a practical option for drivers.”
“As electric vehicles market is still developing, public funding remains essential to support infrastructure expansion and its economic viability.”
OMV Petrom said the expanded charging network is intended to improve long-distance electric vehicle travel across Central and Eastern Europe while supporting the region’s transition toward lower-emission transportation.
