McLaren team has declared its participation in the 2022/23 Formula E championship by taking over the Mercedes team. To take part in the electric car racing championship, the British team will use an electric powertrain from Nissan.

Nissan and McLaren Racing today announced a multi-year technical collaboration, which will begin at the start of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season.

Nissan enters Formula E for the 2018-19 season with its partnership with the French team e.dams. Earlier this year, Nissan purchased e.dams and confirmed their participation as a manufacturing team.

“Our new partnership with McLaren Racing will be a powerful one, as the association will inspire collaboration and knowledge sharing,” said Ashwani Gupta, Nissan’s chief operating officer. “The pioneering spirit and drive to innovate are characteristics Nissan and McLaren Racing share, making them an ideal partner for us in Formula E and as we continue to electrify our vehicles.”

Meanwhile, McLaren chose to use an electric powertrain from Nissan because of their knowledge and experience participating in the last four seasons in Formula E.

“Nissan has proven their knowledge, craft and commitment over the last four seasons in Formula E, and heading into the Gen3 era, we have full confidence that the collaboration will bring both parties much success,” said McLaren team principal Zak Brown.

McLaren has yet to announce a lineup of drivers or commercial partners for their inaugural Formula E season.

But sources have indicated the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund will lend support to the McLaren Formula E team by advertising the city of Neom.
