Nissan has confirmed that it will introduce a fully electric version of the Micra in 2024, marking the model’s first transition to an all-electric drivetrain. The new Micra EV will be built by Renault in France and will utilize the AmpR Small platform, the same architecture underpinning the Renault R5 electric car.
The Micra, which was first introduced as a combustion-engine vehicle in 1982, ended production of its fifth-generation model in 2022. At the time, Nissan announced plans to revive the model as an EV. The redesigned Micra will be manufactured at Renault’s ElectriCity facility in Douai, France, a key production site for the automaker’s subsidiary, Ampere. Renault CEO Luca de Meo has now secured Nissan as the first external customer for the R5 platform, following unsuccessful negotiations with Volkswagen in mid-2024.

Technical details about the Micra EV remain limited. However, Nissan has confirmed that it will offer two battery options: 40 kWh and 52 kWh—identical to those available in the Renault R5. The larger battery is expected to deliver a range of approximately 410 kilometers under the WLTP standard, while the 40 kWh variant will offer around 300 kilometers. Pricing for the smaller-battery R5 starts at €24,990 in Germany, suggesting a similar entry-level price for the Micra EV. A teaser image indicates that the new model will feature round headlights, a design element that distinguishes it from its Renault counterpart.
Beyond the Micra, Nissan plans to expand its European EV lineup with two additional models. The third-generation Nissan Leaf will debut this year, following the discontinuation of its predecessor’s production in Sunderland, UK, in March 2024. The new Leaf, built on the CMF-EV platform shared with the Nissan Ariya, features a more aerodynamic design. Meanwhile, an all-electric Nissan Juke is scheduled for release in 2026. This model, inspired by the Hyper Punk concept showcased at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, will be the first Juke to be offered solely as an EV.

“The renewal of Nissan’s European line-up is the realisation of our strong plan to enhance and electrify our range in Europe,” said Leon Dorssers, Regional Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Nissan AMIEO. “All the new models will share common Nissan DNA: striking design, technical innovation and intuitive technology – a combination of qualities which we are confident will attract new buyers to Nissan, as well as continuing to appeal to existing customers who already love how Nissan vehicles enrich their daily lives.”
