Nissan is recalling more than 1,000 Ariya electric SUVs due to steering wheel detachment issues, following a similar investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into the Tesla Model Y. The NHTSA’s investigation of the Tesla Model Y was initiated after two reports of steering wheel detachment in the 2023 model year.

The agency discovered that both vehicles had undergone an “end-of-line repair” that required steering wheel removal and re-installation. The NHTSA and Tesla are collaborating to determine whether any additional vehicles were affected and if a recall is necessary.

In the meantime, Nissan has already issued a recall notice for 1,063 Ariya electric vehicles. The recall is due to an incorrectly tightened or improperly installed steering wheel, which can result in its detachment from the steering column. This loss of steering control can increase the risk of a crash.

Nissan initiated a “dealer quality action” after receiving two reports of loose steering wheels between January 30 and February 8, 2023, resulting in the inspection of the steering wheels on 418 Ariya vehicles. Another incident was discovered, prompting the voluntary recall of over 1,000 units.

Nissan has advised Ariya owners to contact their dealers for immediate repair if their steering wheel feels loose when rocked back and forth. Dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt for free, including labor, and the recall number is PC956. For more information, owners can call Nissan’s customer service line.
