A Wisconsin woman who discovered a racial slur on her vehicle’s oil change sticker is receiving a free Nissan LEAF from a dealership in New York, a move intended to provide both support and a lasting solution to the troubling incident.
The incident occurred last month when Makayla Starks took her SUV for service at Kunes Buick GMC in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. After her story went viral, Family Nissan, a dealership nearly 900 miles away, stepped in to offer her a new electric vehicle.

“We were frustrated, we were upset,” said Ramzey Rizk, the dealership’s owner. “We’re hoping this helps Makayla by saying we are with you. We got your back.”
Rizk explained that the choice of vehicle was deliberate. “It wasn’t just about giving her a car,” he said. “It was about giving her an electric car that doesn’t need oil changes ever again.”
Kunes Buick GMC dismissed the employee responsible, but Starks said the experience was deeply upsetting. “The incident with the oil change sticker happened, so that was pretty painful and harmful,” she said.

However, she is trying to find a positive side to the situation. “The universe shows up in kind of strange ways,” Starks said. “And I think the silver lining is that I’m unexpectedly getting a car out of all of this, which would be very helpful for my family.”
Starks is scheduled to fly to New York on Friday to collect the Nissan LEAF. She does not plan to keep the SUV she originally purchased from Kunes.
