Firefly, the sub-brand of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio (NYSE: NIO), has formed a partnership with location data provider HERE Technologies to support the development of its smart driving features and overseas expansion, the companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday.
Under the agreement, HERE will provide Firefly with high-definition map data and a suite of location services designed to enhance advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and overall vehicle performance. The partnership also includes the integration of real-time traffic information and digital cockpit features, developed in collaboration with navigation software firm Telenav Inc.
Firefly will incorporate HERE’s global mapping capabilities, including data on speed limits, to support Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) compliance across the European Union. “To bring Firefly to Europe, we needed to collaborate with a partner who understands the complexities of global mobility,” said Chris Chen, vice president of global business development at Nio. “With HERE’s expertise, we can ensure that Firefly drivers experience the same seamless and intelligent mobility solutions, no matter where they are.”
Firefly, which targets the premium compact EV market, launched its first vehicle in China in April, with prices starting at RMB 119,800 ($16,700). Although originally intended for a European debut, the model was introduced in China first due to challenges associated with EU tariffs. Nio has since conducted a 15-day, multi-country test drive across Europe to prepare for market entry.
According to Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong, Firefly’s European launch is planned between June and August, with the brand aiming to enter approximately 20 international markets by year-end. Right-hand drive models are expected to be ready by October, initially targeting the UK and Southeast Asia.
