NIO Recall of 997 ET5 Electric Sedans Due to Potential Safety Hazard in Frontal Collisions

NIO is recalling a total of 997 ET5 electric sedans due to a potential safety hazard in the event of a serious frontal collision. The vehicles, which were manufactured between September 7, 2022, and October 10, 2022, may have a front cabin shock tower that crushes the high-voltage wire harness after being deformed by the impact, which in extreme cases may cause the wire harness to break and short circuit with the body.

To fix this issue, NIO will retrofit the high-voltage wire harness with a high-strength insulating protective cover for the recalled vehicles at no cost to the owner. This recall is a rare occurrence for NIO, and it is effective as of January 6, 2023.

The NIO ET5 sedan was unveiled on NIO Day 2021 in December 2021, with the first deliveries made on September 30, 2022. It has a starting price of RMB 328,000 ($46,970), including the battery, making it the most affordable model in NIO’s lineup.

The ET5 is produced at the F2 plant in NeoPark, while all of NIO’s other models are built at the JAC-NIO F1 plant.
