In a collaborative effort, Nikola, through its HYLA brand, and BayoTech have announced a strategic supply agreement aimed at advancing the availability of reliable hydrogen for zero-emission commercial fuel cell electric vehicle fleets. The agreement encompasses several components, including Nikola’s Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks, BayoTech’s HyFill™ bulk hydrogen transport trailers, and hydrogen production at BayoTech’s distributed network of hubs.

Nikola, as the primary hydrogen customer, expects to receive deliveries of low-carbon hydrogen from BayoTech, starting this year in Missouri and expanding to California in 2024. To facilitate the distribution of high-pressure gaseous hydrogen from production sites to refueling stations serving fuel cell electric vehicle fleets, Nikola plans to procure up to 10 BayoTech HyFill™ transport trailers.

Michael Lohscheller, the President and CEO of Nikola Corporation, expressed the shared vision between Nikola and BayoTech, stating, “Nikola and BayoTech are united by a common goal of providing reliable access to hydrogen throughout the United States. BayoTech’s low-carbon hydrogen fuel and transport equipment will play an important part in supporting the adoption of Nikola’s Class 8 fuel cell electric zero-emission trucks.”

As part of the agreement, BayoTech has committed to purchasing up to 50 Nikola Class 8 fuel cell electric vehicles within the next five years. The initial delivery of twelve trucks is scheduled for 2023 and 2024. Paired with BayoTech’s HyFill™ bulk hydrogen transport trailers, these trucks will facilitate the delivery of low-carbon hydrogen to customers from BayoTech’s hydrogen production hubs.

Mo Vargas, President and CEO of BayoTech, expressed pride in being an industry leader committed to delivering hydrogen through zero-emission fuel cell trucks. Vargas emphasized that partnering with forward-thinking companies like Nikola allows BayoTech to expedite the deployment of its hydrogen hub network and foster the growth of the hydrogen ecosystem.

Nikola’s fuel cell electric vehicle boasts an impressive range of up to 500 miles, making it one of the most long-range zero-tailpipe-emission Class 8 trucks available. Its versatility allows for various applications, including drayage, intermodal, truckload, less than truckload, and specialized hauling.

BayoTech’s HyFill™ bulk hydrogen transport trailers are relied upon by customers for efficient hydrogen transportation to distribution and dispensing sites, as well as the end-users, such as retail refueling stations, backup power systems in remote areas, and industrial manufacturing sites.
