NHTSA Issues Recall for 35 Tesla Semis Due to Potential Parking Brake Issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for the Tesla Semi, citing a potential problem with the parking brake that could result in a rollaway. While the number of delivered Semis to customers is still unknown, the recall affects 35 examples of the electric truck. Owners will be notified by letter this May.

According to NHTSA, the issue may stem from the electronic parking brake valve module (PVM), which was supplied by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC. The component “could fail to move into parking position when the parking brake is activated,” potentially causing the truck to roll away and leading to an accident.

The supplier became aware of the issue in February, and after Tesla’s investigation, the decision was made for a voluntary recall. Thankfully, no incidents have been reported. Owners of affected Semis can have their PVMs replaced free of charge at a Tesla service station. Technicians will use a revised part featuring “improved internals that prevents air leakage,” resulting in seamless engagement and disengagement of the parking brake.

Notification letters will be sent on May 23, but customers can contact Tesla or NHTSA earlier if they have concerns.

This recall follows at least eight known breakdown incidents of the Tesla Semi, with some reportedly caused by malfunctioning screens. It remains to be seen if Tesla will issue another recall or if significant software issues are hiding behind the stranded Semis. As always, safety should remain a top priority for all automakers, and prompt action must be taken to address potential issues before they become hazards on the road.
