The forthcoming electric Mini is set to bring a host of improvements to the popular compact car. Scheduled for release in 2024, the next-generation model will boast a refreshed design, more power, and significantly larger battery options than its predecessor.
Two battery choices will be available, with capacities of 40kWh and 54kWh. This represents a significant increase from the 32.6kWh battery used in the previous Mini model. While official range estimates are yet to be released for the EPA cycle, it’s anticipated that the new battery options will offer around 300km and 400km of range on WLTP test cycles, respectively. This should translate to approximately 145 and 180 miles of range on the EPA cycle, although these numbers are typically lower.
The smaller battery version will retain the same 181hp/135kW motor as the current Cooper SE model, while the larger 54kWh battery will get a power upgrade to 215hp/160kW. Additionally, Mini has plans to release a “John Cooper Works” version with even more power in 2025, bringing the electric Mini in line with its gasoline-powered counterpart.

Although Mini will continue to manufacture gas-powered vehicles, it aims for electric cars to account for 50% of its sales by 2025, up from the current 15%. The company has set a goal to become all-electric and cease the sale of gas vehicles by 2030, with the final gasoline-powered Mini slated for release in 2025. To achieve this, Mini must rely heavily on electric car sales.
The refreshed design of the new Mini remains under wraps, with the automaker opting to keep it camouflaged until its official unveiling later this year. However, leaked photos of an uncamouflaged Mini in China from December 2021 offer some insight into the forthcoming model. These photos reveal significant exterior design changes, including new taillights and a larger center screen.
Produced in partnership with Great Wall Motor, the new Mini represents the fruits of a 2018 agreement between BMW and Great Wall. If Mini’s plans come to fruition, the electric Mini will usher in a new era of sustainable transportation, proving that electric cars can be just as fun and practical as their gas-powered counterparts.
