Danish public transport company Movia has introduced 66 new electric buses into its fleet, bringing the total number of electric buses in operation in the Copenhagen and Zealand regions to 565. This milestone means that half of Movia’s fleet is now electric, six years ahead of the company’s original target set in 2020. The company operates a total of 1,126 buses, with the electric buses now covering over 51 million kilometres annually.
According to Movia, the new 66 electric buses are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 3,100 tonnes per year. The company’s original target, set in collaboration with local authorities and the regions of Hovedstaden and Zealand, aimed for half of its fleet to be electric by 2030. However, Movia has now reached this goal by the end of 2024, prompting the company and its partners to revise the target to 94% electric buses by 2030.
Movia’s managing director, Dorthe Nøhr Pedersen, commented on the achievement, saying, “For us at Movia, it is a major milestone that we can now say that half of our buses are electric. We are proud to be contributing to lower CO2 emissions as well as less noise and particulate emissions.” The company is also planning to electrify longer routes, including the 74.5-kilometre Line 600S between Ishøj station and Hillerød station, with new charging devices at the final stops.
Currently, Movia operates 375 bus routes, with 158 of these being fully electric. These routes collectively cover over 51 million kilometres per year, not including diversions, contributing significantly to the company’s sustainability efforts.
