Michelin has formed a partnership with Beontag to incorporate its RFID technology into millions of commercial and passenger tires over the next two years. The collaboration will embed UHF RFID tags in Michelin tires, enabling the tracking of each tire’s lifecycle, including manufacturing, storage, distribution, installation, and replacement.

The two companies have been working together since 2019 to develop this RFID system, with extensive testing and development leading to the creation of a “reliable connected tire” that can endure up to 621,000 miles, including retreading of truck tires.

Laurent Couturier, RFID system designer at Michelin, stated, “This system enables precise, automated tracking of each tire from production to retreading or recycling. The RFID tire-tag improves industrial performance while addressing today’s ecological imperatives.”

Beontag’s global vice president of digital transformation, Suchi Srinivasan, noted the significance of the technology’s capabilities. “We have worked hard to develop the necessary technology and durability capabilities in these RFID-enabled tires, making sure they are suited to the needs of modern vehicles and their drivers,” Srinivasan said.
