SAIC Motor’s MG brand said pre-sale orders for its new MG4 electric hatchback have surpassed 20,000 units, according to an announcement on the company’s official Weibo account. Strong demand has prompted MG to move the official launch forward to August 29 from its originally scheduled September release.

MG opened a limited “Pioneer Program” on August 15, offering 500 MG4 units for early reservation through the “MG Live” app. The program sold out in just four minutes and 36 seconds. General pre-sale for the MG4 began on August 5, with pricing ranging from 73,800 yuan (about $10,300) to 105,800 yuan ($14,700).

The MG4 retains a hatchback body and incorporates a revised design language led by Shao Jingfeng, Chief Designer at SAIC Motor and General Manager of the UK Tech Centre. The vehicle features an illuminated front logo similar to the MG Cyberster, arrow-shaped taillights inspired by the Union Jack, and six body color options. Its dimensions measure 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, 1,551 mm in height, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the MG4 offers a wraparound cabin layout with an infotainment system jointly developed by SAIC and Oppo, supporting full smartphone integration. The vehicle uses SAIC’s Cell-to-Body (CTB) battery integration, lowering the cabin floor and increasing interior space. Power is provided by a front-mounted 120 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery. The Anxin Edition will feature semi-solid-state batteries, with details to be announced at launch. Other variants support fast charging from 30% to 80% in around 20 minutes, with a CLTC-rated range of up to 530 km and energy consumption of 10.4 kWh per 100 km.

In addition, Vivo has announced that its OriginOS “digital car key” system is now compatible with MG vehicles, starting with the MG4. The system allows compatible smartphones, including models from Vivo’s X, S, and iQOO series, to unlock and start the vehicle with a tap. The feature is already available for brands including Buick, BYD, BMW, Changan, Zeekr, Li Auto, MINI, Smart, Tesla, Nio, Xpeng, and IM Motors.
