Mercedes-Benz said demand for the new battery-electric Mercedes-Benz GLC has exceeded expectations as the company ramps up production at its Bremen manufacturing plant in Germany.

The automaker said the electric GLC generated more orders during its first three months on the market than any previous electric vehicle in the company’s history.

Mercedes-Benz currently produces the electric GLC at its Bremen facility, where the internal combustion engine version of the GLC has long been manufactured. The now-discontinued Mercedes-Benz EQC was also assembled at the site.

Unlike the EQC, which shared much of its architecture with combustion-engine models, the electric GLC is based on Mercedes-Benz’s dedicated MB.EA-M electric vehicle platform.

The company said Hall 9 at the Bremen plant, its largest assembly hall, was designed to manufacture vehicles with multiple drivetrain types on the same production line. The facility currently assembles combustion-engine, hybrid and plug-in hybrid GLC models alongside the fully electric Mercedes-Benz EQE.

“With the ramp-up of the all-new electric GLC, they are mastering its complex integration into ongoing production with the utmost professionalism, supported by our consistent digital transformation,” Michael Schiebe, board member responsible for Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management at Mercedes-Benz Group, said in a statement.

“In doing so, Bremen is strengthening its role as a centre of excellence for core-segment models and is once again setting new standards in automotive engineering,” Schiebe added.

Mercedes-Benz did not disclose production volumes for the new model or the current output mix at the Bremen facility.

The automaker also provided details about the supply chain for the electric GLC. Battery systems for the model are supplied by Accumotive from its Kamenz facility in Germany.

The electric SUV uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, while electric drive units are produced at Mercedes-Benz’s Sebeș plant in Romania.

Mercedes said the Sebeș site is the second facility in its global production network, after Untertürkheim, to manufacture electric drive units for vehicle plants.

Components including electric axles are additionally supplied through the company’s Hamburg plant, which has been producing electric axle systems for the EQE since 2022 and now also manufactures components for the electric GLC.

“In 2019, we were the first plant to integrate an electric vehicle into ongoing series production,” Michael Frieß, site manager and head of production at the Bremen plant, said in a statement.

“Plug-in hybrids and fully electric models are now an integral part of our product portfolio,” Frieß added. “We owe all of this, including the successful ramp-up of the all-new GLC, to our employees, who tackle the most complex tasks with great commitment and total dedication.”

Michael Peters, chairman of the Bremen plant’s works council, said the start of production marked an important step for the facility’s long-term future.

“The GLC represents the new face of our brand,” Peters said. “We’re delighted to be able to build this forward-looking model here in Bremen and expand our product family with another vehicle.”
