Mercedes-Benz has reportedly suspended production of its China-exclusive CLA L electric sedan at its Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. (BBAC) joint venture, amid signs of weak market demand for the long-wheelbase model.
The reported production pause was first published by German automotive outlet mb passion, citing industry sources. Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed the report or disclosed any reason for a potential halt in production.

Sales Reportedly Miss Expectations
According to the report, disappointing sales are believed to be the primary reason behind the production pause.
Industry sources indicated that only 627 units of the CLA L were sold during the first half of 2026, suggesting the model has struggled to gain traction in China’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.
Registration data also points to inconsistent demand throughout the year. The model recorded 35 registrations in January, 21 in February, before rising to 358 units in March. Registrations then fell to 52 in April, recovered to 161 in May, and reportedly dropped to zero in June.

It remains unclear whether the absence of June registrations was directly related to the reported production pause or influenced by inventory management, logistics or delivery schedules.

The CLA L was designed specifically for Chinese buyers, where long-wheelbase sedans remain particularly popular.
Manufactured by BBAC, Mercedes-Benz’s joint venture with Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC), the electric sedan was unveiled in Beijing in late 2025.
Compared with the European version of the electric CLA, the Chinese model is 40 millimeters longer, bringing its overall length to 4.76 meters.
The vehicle is equipped with an 89 kWh battery that delivers up to 866 kilometers of driving range under the CLTC testing cycle.

Power comes from a 200 kW (272 hp) rear-mounted electric motor, with Mercedes-Benz claiming energy consumption of 10.9 kWh per 100 kilometers.
The CLA L also features an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of charging at up to 325 kW, allowing the battery to recover approximately 370 kilometers of driving range in around 10 minutes under ideal conditions.

If the reported production suspension is confirmed, it would highlight the increasingly difficult environment facing international premium automakers in China.
Domestic manufacturers continue to expand their presence across both mainstream and premium EV segments, placing growing pressure on established global brands through competitive pricing, rapid product development and advanced in-vehicle technology.
