Daimler Truck has released further information about the highly anticipated world premiere of the eActros LongHaul, Mercedes-Benz’s electric truck designed for long-distance transportation. The official debut of the truck, named eActros 600, is scheduled for October 10. Notably, the production model will feature a distinctive visual appearance that sets it apart from previous Mercedes truck models.
According to a statement by Daimler Truck, the design of the driver’s cab will deviate from the familiar Actros series and incorporate elements from the concept prototype showcased at the IAA in September 2022. The prototype’s design language will continue with “clear lines and an aerodynamic shape.” While the manufacturer did not specify the exact interior innovations, improvements are expected.
Daimler Truck has disclosed the new model name, eActros 600, which will be immediately assigned to the production model scheduled for release in 2024. Similar to the eActros 300/400 models designed for distribution transport, the designation “600” corresponds to the battery capacity in kilowatt-hours. Like its smaller counterparts, the eActros 600 will utilize an electric rigid axle equipped with two integrated electric motors. These motors will provide a continuous output of 400 kW and a peak output exceeding 600 kW. The truck will introduce an 800-volt system architecture.
Since the IAA presentation, it has been known that the eActros 600 will enter series production in 2024, offering a range of approximately 500 kilometers, including the MCS charging standard. Furthermore, the batteries of the eActros LongHaul can be charged from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes, delivering about one megawatt of power. Notably, Daimler Truck has adopted lithium iron phosphate cell technology for the first time in its electric heavy-duty vehicles due to its extended lifespan and enhanced usable energy. The company anticipates the vehicle to achieve a mileage of 1.2 million kilometers over ten years of operation. Additional specifications and details regarding the vehicle are provided in this article. Mercedes-Benz Trucks intends to produce platform chassis variants of the eActros 600 alongside the semi-trailer tractor upon its market launch.
Following the concept prototype’s introduction at the IAA Transportation 2022, Daimler Truck has constructed additional test vehicles at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth, utilizing key components from the Mannheim, Kassel, and Gaggenau facilities. The plan is to create a fleet of approximately 50 prototype vehicles, which will be utilized for practical testing with customers and various other purposes.
Simultaneously, the four aforementioned locations are preparing for series production of the eActros 600. In Wörth, the model will share an existing assembly line with diesel trucks, with electric drive components being supplied from other plants. The Mannheim facility is responsible for manufacturing the “front box,” a complex module specific to battery-powered vehicles, housing control units, high-voltage components, and the electric air compressor. Electric axles for the truck will be assembled in Kassel, where a dedicated assembly line is being established. Gaggenau will supply transmission components and housing parts to the Kassel plant.
Several orders have already been placed for the eActros 600. Tevex Logistics, the logistics subsidiary of the Tönnies Group, signed a letter of intent for 50 units earlier this year. Prior to that, both the Hegelmann Group and Dachser had expressed their intention to procure 50 units of the model each. The delivery timeline for these initial customers remains to be determined.
