Luxury German automaker Mercedes-Benz has announced its sales statistics for 2022, and the numbers are impressive. The company has more than doubled its electric vehicle (EV) sales compared to the previous year, selling a total of 117,800 EVs in 2022, up 124% from 2021.

Mercedes has established itself as a leader in electrification in Europe, introducing significantly more EV models than its traditional rivals BMW, Audi, and Porsche. Its aggressive electrification plan has caught the market’s attention, resulting in an impressive surge in EV sales.

The Mercedes EQA was the top-selling model, with 33,100 units sold, followed by the EQB and EQS, selling 24,200 and 19,200 units, respectively. The newest model to the family, the Mercedes EQE, sold 12,600 units globally. Although EV sales still represent a small percentage of the automaker’s total sales, they are increasing.

Mercedes’ success can be attributed to its impressive production ramp, which allowed the brand to overcome its chip shortage and exit the Russian market. The EQS was the biggest benefactor of this production shift, with Q4 of 2022 being its best-selling quarter ever.

Asia was Mercedes’ biggest market, with sales of 987,800 units, followed by China, with 751,700 units sold. Europe sold 635,100 units, North America sold 327,000, and the rest of the world sold only 94,000 units, a 24% decrease from the previous year.

Mercedes’ path forward is clear: continue with aggressive electrification. The automaker plans to introduce new electric models and electrify new segments of its business, including the Maybach EQS SUV, the first all-electric ultra-luxury vehicle from the brand. Mercedes is also creating its own EV charging infrastructure, consisting of 10,000 chargers worldwide, and shifting its dealerships towards more electric offerings.

Despite Mercedes’ impressive growth in EV sales, Tesla remains a significant competitor in many major markets. However, with its aggressive electrification and leadership in autonomous driving software, Mercedes is poised to dominate its traditional competition in the coming year.
