Mercedes-Benz sold 197,300 battery-electric vehicles worldwide in 2025, down 4% from the previous year, as weaker demand for electric passenger cars outweighed growth in electric vans, the German automaker said.

The latest decline follows a sharp drop in 2024, when the Mercedes-Benz Group’s battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales fell 22% from 2023 levels. With a further 9% fall year-on-year in 2025, the group delivered fewer electric vehicles last year than its Mercedes-Benz Cars division alone sold in 2024, highlighting continued pressure on its electric car business.

Mercedes-Benz Cars delivered 168,800 electric passenger cars in 2025, down from 185,100 a year earlier and well below the 222,600 units sold in 2023, when deliveries had surged 73%. The company said performance improved toward the end of the year, helped by new model launches.

“Fourth quarter Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales increased by 3% compared to Q4 last year and 18% compared to the prior quarter, mainly driven by the new electric CLA,” Mercedes-Benz said, adding that fourth-quarter deliveries of 50,400 units marked the first time since late 2023 that quarterly BEV sales exceeded 50,000.

Growth in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) helped offset the decline in pure electric cars. Mercedes sold 368,600 PHEVs in 2025, up 9% year-on-year, bringing total electrified vehicle sales — which the company classifies as ‘xEVs’ — to 537,400 units. That represented 29.8% of Mercedes-Benz Cars’ total passenger car sales of 1.8 million vehicles, although fully electric cars accounted for just 9.4% of the total.

The automaker did not provide a detailed regional or segment breakdown for BEV sales, but said Europe recorded its highest-ever share of electrified vehicles at 40%. It also reported record BEV sales in markets including France, Denmark, India and Australia, without specifying where demand weakened overall.

Mercedes-Benz said order intake for new electric models remained strong, particularly for the CLA. “This momentum now extends to the wider portfolio,” the company said, pointing to new electric versions of the CLA Shooting Brake, GLB and GLC. Mathias Geisen, Head of Mercedes-Benz Sales and Marketing, said: “Following the outstanding start of the new CLA, demand for the new all-electric GLC is now also significantly exceeding our expectations.”

Chief Executive Ola Källenius said the company had begun its largest product and technology launch programme to date. “In 2025 we kicked-off the biggest product and tech launch program at Mercedes-Benz with cutting-edge electric-drive systems and intelligent software,” he said, adding that further launches were planned for 2026.

By contrast, Mercedes-Benz Vans posted strong growth, with electric van sales rising 46% to 28,500 units in 2025, representing 8% of global van deliveries and 11% in Europe. “The development is mainly driven by the full availability of the electric van portfolio and is proving that Mercedes-Benz eVans match customers’ needs,” the company said. Sagree Sardien, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales & Marketing, said the division was preparing for a “new era” with the launch of the all-electric VLE model in 2026.
