Mercedes-AMG is gearing up to enter the electric vehicle race with a new offering set to rival top contenders in the high-performance electric sedan category, including the Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Audi e-tron GT. The upcoming model, developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG, will be built upon a cutting-edge architecture known as AMG.EV, designed to accommodate low-slung EVs powered by Yasa’s advanced axial-flux electric motors.
While specific details about the new electric sedan remain closely guarded by Mercedes-AMG, Autocar reported insights from Yasa, one of the key technology partners. According to Yasa, one of its 24 kg (53 lbs) electric motors boasts an impressive output of 480 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. Combining two of these motors would yield nearly 1,000 hp. Furthermore, for those seeking even more power, a tri-motor setup similar to the Model S Plaid, Lucid Air Sapphire, and the upcoming three-motor version of the Taycan could potentially deliver over 1,400 hp.
The evolving market for ultra-high-performance electric sedans is set to become more exhilarating with the introduction of electric versions of renowned models like the BMW M3 and Audi RS6.
In 2022, Mercedes-AMG provided a glimpse of their electric sedan vision with the Vision AMG Concept. Autocar asserts that this concept closely foreshadows the production model’s size and design. The concept, measuring 5,100 mm (200.7 inches) in length, slightly surpasses the current GT 4-Door Coupe and exceeds the Porsche Taycan’s length by 147 mm (5.7 inches).
An integral aspect of the forthcoming electric sedan is the battery pack. To maintain a lower profile, Mercedes-AMG is opting for a slim battery pack with silicon anodes supplied by U.S.-based firm Sila.
The electric alternative to the GT 4-Door Coupe will not stand alone on the AMG.EV platform, as Mercedes-Benz’s head of exterior design, Robert Lesnik, hinted at broader aspirations. “The AMG.EA platform provides a lot of scope design-wise. We’re able to go much lower than with the EVA platform,” he revealed. While specifics remain confidential, Lesnik alluded to the platform’s versatility and hinted at the likelihood of additional AMG-specific electric models in the future, with the Vision AMG serving as an initial foray into this electrified realm.
