Michigan-based self-driving technology firm May Mobility has announced plans to integrate five autonomous vehicles (AVs) into the public transportation services operated by Minneapolis’ SouthWest Transit in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, starting in the fall.

The agreement marks a significant expansion of SouthWest Transit’s existing shared ride and on-demand “microtransit” options in the southwest suburb of the Twin Cities, with AVs being introduced for the first time in the area.

Under a three-year deal, May Mobility will deploy its converted Toyota Siennas equipped with Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) technology. These AVs will transport residents between residential, employment, and shopping districts in Eden Prairie, including connecting routes to local mobility hubs like the Southwest Light Rail, which links downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul.

May Mobility’s AVs utilize lidar, radar sensors, and cameras to provide a comprehensive 360-degree view of their surroundings. The MPDM system processes this data to simulate potential scenarios rapidly, enabling the vehicles to make safe navigation decisions autonomously.

Users will access May Mobility’s AVs through the SouthWest Transit Prime app, developed by software company Spare, similar to the current microtransit services in Eden Prairie. Notably, the AVs feature ADA-compliant wheelchair ramps and securement systems, ensuring accessibility for community members with mobility challenges.

May Mobility has demonstrated its technology in diverse environments, including harsh winter climates in Minnesota, following previous deployments such as in Grand Rapids since 2022. Manik Dhar, Chief Commercial Officer of May Mobility, emphasized the company’s track record in deploying safe and equitable autonomous rides, enhancing public transportation systems across the United States.

Erik Hansen, CEO of SouthWest Transit, expressed enthusiasm about introducing this innovative transit solution to the Twin Cities, expanding on the success of SouthWest Prime microtransit service. He highlighted the commitment to providing premium transit services that cater to the community’s evolving needs.

May Mobility’s deployments nationwide, including services in Sun City, Arizona, Martinez, California, and Detroit, have collectively delivered approximately 350,000 autonomous rides, showcasing the scalability and reliability of their AV technology.
