German commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus has completed its largest single electric bus order in Austria, delivering 63 battery-electric buses to public transport operator ÖBB Postbus, the companies said.

The order comprises 27 Lion’s City 12 E solo buses and 36 Lion’s City 18 E articulated buses, which will be deployed across several regions of Vorarlberg, Austria’s westernmost federal state. The articulated models will mainly serve heavily used routes with high passenger volumes, while the solo buses will reinforce Postbus services on standard routes.

According to MAN, both bus variants offer a range of up to 350 kilometres, enabled by six battery packs on the Lion’s City 12 E and eight on the Lion’s City 18 E. The solo buses are configured with 30 seats and space for 61 standing passengers, while the articulated version provides 42 seats and room for 113 standing passengers. All vehicles are low-floor, wheelchair-accessible and equipped with MAN’s swing-sliding door technology and a range of driver assistance systems.

Vorarlberg is already one of Austria’s most advanced regions in public transport electrification. MAN said around one in three buses operating in the state is now battery-electric, giving Vorarlberg the country’s largest electric bus fleet. About 100 electric buses are currently in regular service, more than half of them operated by ÖBB Postbus. The fleet is expected to grow to 141 vehicles by spring and to around 200 electric buses by 2030.

“In the future, we will continue to contribute to sustainable regional transport with our innovative MAN electric buses,” said Rudi Kuchta, managing director of MAN Truck & Bus Austria. He added that MAN currently holds a market share of more than 50% in Austria’s electric bus segment, citing long-standing cooperation with ÖBB Postbus as a key factor. MAN said it delivered a total of 112 electric buses in Austria in 2025.

The expansion of electric bus services in Vorarlberg is supported by a growing charging network. The state currently has 144 bus charging points, including 75 at Postbus depots in Wolfurt, Bludenz and Feldkirch, installed and operated by energy provider illwerke vkw. The Wolfurt depot alone has been converted into an electric bus hub with 54 chargers delivering up to 240 kW, with capacity to expand to 84 charging points in a second phase.
