Mahindra has inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) production and battery assembly plant in Chakan, Maharashtra, marking a key step in its push toward electric mobility. The facility, located within the company’s 2.83 km² manufacturing hub, spans 88,000 m² and operates entirely on renewable energy.

The plant is equipped with more than 1,000 robots and various automated transfer systems, including 500 robots in the body shop. It also features advanced technologies such as laser brazing and pixel painting, making it the first of its kind in India to include these innovations. Mahindra aims to initially produce 90,000 EVs annually, with plans to ramp up production to 200,000 units by 2029.

The new facility also houses one of the world’s most compact battery manufacturing lines, with 98% of the operations fully automated. The assembly line includes features like zero-touch cell handling, 3D vision-enabled plate mounting, and fully automated bolt integrity, though the company has not disclosed the annual production capacity for batteries.

Construction of the plant began in July 2023, and Mahindra completed it ahead of schedule in January 2024. The plant will focus on manufacturing the BE 6 sub-compact SUV-coupe and the XEV 9e compact SUV-coupe, as well as assembling their LFP batteries. The company plans to launch these models in the domestic market by March 2024. The production facility is part of an INR 4,500 crore investment that also covers powertrain development and the technology behind the BE 6 and XEV 9e models.

Looking ahead, Mahindra plans to expand its EV lineup with five “Born Electric Vehicles” by the end of 2026. The company is also targeting competitive markets in the UK and Europe, hoping to tap into the growing demand for electric mobility in these regions. Mahindra’s new production facility represents a significant milestone in its efforts to become a leading player in the global EV market.
