Leapmotor has previewed the A05s, a new compact electric vehicle (EV) that brings LiDAR-equipped advanced driver-assistance technology to the highly competitive entry-level segment in China.
The Stellantis-backed automaker described the A05s as a “smart and nimble premium sedan,” making it the second model in its A-series lineup following the A10 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV).
Although marketed as a sedan in China, official images show the A05s adopts a compact hatchback design with rounded styling and a two-tone exterior finished in a pink-and-ink color scheme. The vehicle also features a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, continuing a growing trend of introducing advanced sensing technology to lower-priced EVs.
Up to 510 Kilometers of Range
The A05s appears to be based on the previously announced A05, which was filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier this year.
According to regulatory filings, the vehicle measures 4,200 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,560 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,605 mm. Exterior features include semi-hidden door handles and distinctive smile-shaped rear light clusters.
The model will be available with two electric motor options producing 70 kW and 90 kW.
Customers will be able to choose between 39.8 kWh and 53 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, delivering driving ranges of up to 405 kilometers and 510 kilometers, respectively.
Battery supplies are expected to come from Gotion High-tech and Zenergy.
Targeting the Entry-Level EV Market
The addition of LiDAR reflects a broader trend among Chinese automakers to introduce advanced driver-assistance technologies into more affordable vehicles.
Leapmotor’s strategy follows a similar move by BYD, which recently introduced a LiDAR-equipped version of its Seagull city car.
Once launched, the A05s is expected to compete directly with popular compact electric models including the BYD Dolphin and the Geely Xingyuan.
Leapmotor previously indicated that the A05 would enter the market during the summer of 2026, with the company expecting new A-series models, including the A10, to contribute around 60% of total vehicle sales this year.
