Lancia has confirmed that its next new model will be named Gamma, reviving a nameplate from the brand’s history as part of its broader comeback plans.
The upcoming Gamma will share a platform with the newly revealed DS No8 and is set for production in 2026 at Lancia’s Melfi, Italy plant. However, despite the brand’s revitalization efforts, Lancia has no plans to re-enter the U.S. market in the near future.
The original Lancia Gamma was a flagship model produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s, available as either a two-door coupe or a fastback sedan. It featured a flat four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, with distinctive Pininfarina styling.
While the new Gamma is expected to be more modern, it could follow in the footsteps of the DS No8, which offers powertrains ranging from 230 to 350 hp and both front- and all-wheel-drive options. It is likely to be launched as a four-door sedan, given the declining market for coupes, though a quirky coupe version could still be a possibility.
This model will be the second of three new Lancia cars planned between 2023 and 2028, following the redesigned Ypsilon hatchback. The third model, expected in 2028, is rumored to be a revival of the Delta name. As part of its comeback, Lancia is also planning to open 70 new dealers across Europe, where it has been largely absent in recent years.
