South Korean automaker Kia is making strides in the US electric vehicle (EV) market, with its recently launched three-row electric SUV, the EV9, surpassing expectations. In January, Kia handed over more than 1,400 EV9 models, outperforming its own EV6 in US sales.

Kia’s strong start to the year is attributed to a 57% year-on-year growth in EV sales, largely fueled by the success of the EV9, which was introduced in December. The 27% month-on-month increase, from 1,113 to 1,408 units delivered, underscores the positive market reception. Remarkably, the EV9 even outpaced Toyota’s bZ4X, the sole EV in Toyota’s lineup, in its debut sales month.

While the EV6 achieved a record January with 1,213 units sold, the EV9 is quickly establishing itself as a frontrunner as Kia expands its electric vehicle offerings across new segments.

Eric Watson, Vice President of Sales at Kia America, expressed confidence in Kia’s trajectory for 2024, noting the forthcoming release of several new or redesigned vehicles.

Pre-orders for the EV9, initiated in October, garnered reservations from all 50 states within two months. The SUV, with a starting price of $54,900 (excluding destination), has been labeled an industry “wake-up call” by Kia. Slightly larger than the Telluride, the EV9 boasts true SUV capabilities, accommodating up to seven passengers, generous cargo space, 7.9 inches of ground clearance, and an EPA range of up to 304 miles.

Highlighting its spacious interior, the EV9 provides best-in-class second-row legroom at 42.8 inches, surpassing competitors such as the Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover P400 3-Row, and Mercedes EQS SUV. The third row offers additional shoulder and hip room compared to Tesla’s Model X.

Equipped with up to 350 kW DC fast charging, the EV9 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 24 minutes. The vehicle features Kia’s next-gen ccNC infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens and an additional 5-inch HVAC screen.

Available in five trims, the base Light RWD EV9 starts at $54,900 (excluding destination) with an EPA range of up to 230 miles. Kia plans to shift production from South Korea to its West Point, GA, plant later this year to capitalize on federal tax credits.

Currently, Kia offers a $7,500 EV tax credit through leasing, positioning the EV9 competitively in the market and contributing to anticipated sales growth in 2024.
