Kia Motor plans to significantly increase electric vehicle production in Europe over the next two years, driven by the launch of its new EV2 and EV4 models. The automaker expects combined annual output of the two vehicles to reach around 200,000 units globally by 2027.

The EV2, Kia’s smallest and most affordable electric car, will be produced at the company’s Zilina plant in Slovakia, with an expected annual output of approximately 100,000 units. Kia describes the EV2 as designed to “redefine urban electric mobility” with a flexible interior and updated connectivity features.

The EV4, Kia’s first electric hatchback built in Europe, will also be produced at Zilina, with 80,000 units planned for the facility by 2027. Combined with EV4 Fastback or sedan models produced in Korea, the global production of the EV4 is expected to reach about 100,000 units annually.

“The average annual production of the upcoming EV2 is expected to reach around 100,000 units at the Zilina plant in Slovakia in 2027,” Kia CEO Ho Sung Song told Automotive News Europe. He added that producing 100,000 EV2 and EV4 models globally each year would help achieve profitability.

Production targets at Zilina have been revised upward following positive market feedback for the EV4, which launched in August. Kia is investing €108 million ($125 million) in the facility to support EV2 and EV4 production. The plant has a standard capacity of 320,000 vehicles, with potential expansion to 350,000 units using overtime.

Although Kia’s overall vehicle sales in Europe declined 3% through August, its EV sales rose 56% to 71,179 units, with the EV3 model leading the company’s regional EV performance.
