The 2025 World Car Awards were presented at the New York Auto Show, with a notable emphasis on electric vehicles, though many of the winning models are not available in the U.S. market.
Kia’s electric vehicle, the EV3, was named 2025 World Car of the Year, marking a significant achievement for the South Korean automaker. The EV3 triumphed over the BMW X3 and Hyundai Inster, earning Kia its second consecutive World Car of the Year award, following last year’s recognition of the EV9. Although the EV3 is not currently available in the United States, Kia has indicated that it plans to bring the model to the market, provided tariffs do not present obstacles.

“We were impressed by the Kia EV3 when we tested it earlier this year,” the organizers stated. The model has generated strong international interest, even though U.S. consumers will need to wait for its potential arrival.
Electric Vehicles Dominate
The Volvo EX90 secured the 2025 World Luxury Car award, outshining the Porsche Macan and Porsche Panamera. The EX90, starting at $79,995, features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering 402 horsepower (300 kW), along with a 111 kWh battery pack that enables the vehicle to cover up to 310 miles (499 km) on a single charge. Volvo’s electric crossover also boasts impressive acceleration, reaching 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.7 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Inster (also known as the Casper Electric) claimed the World Electric Vehicle title. This compact urban crossover delivers 113 horsepower (85 kW) and is primarily available in Eastern markets.
In the World Urban Car category, the BYD Seagull (also known as the Dolphin Mini) won recognition for its affordability and practicality. Priced under $10,000 in China, the Seagull offers a range of up to 252 miles (405 km) and showcases the growing popularity of budget-friendly electric cars.

World Car Design and Performance Recognition
In a category that typically celebrates traditional vehicle designs, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz took home the World Car Design of the Year award. While the electric van has been on the market for several years, it still impressed judges, defeating models like the Kia EV3 and Toyota Land Cruiser. The Porsche 911 GTS, a standout in performance cars, was named the 2025 World Performance Car.

This model is equipped with a hybridized powertrain that combines a turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-six engine with an electric motor, generating a combined output of 532 horsepower (397 kW). The Porsche 911 GTS accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 194 mph (312 km/h).
