Kempower, one of North America’s fastest-growing electric vehicle (EV) DC charging manufacturers, said it has formed its first U.S. university partnership with the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center at North Carolina State University.

The collaboration will focus on research into electric system reliability, energy management, and charging technologies, particularly multi-megawatt solutions for heavy-duty and off-highway vehicles. Kempower said the alliance builds on its partnerships with three universities in Europe and supports its push to strengthen charging infrastructure in both regions.

“We’re excited to embark on this partnership with the strong research talent at the FREEDM Systems Center and NC State to continue innovating groundbreaking technology,” said Monil Malhotra, president of Kempower North America.

The company, headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, is leveraging the state’s research ecosystem to accelerate product development and tap into a pipeline of engineers and researchers. FREEDM, which operates one of the few U.S. university-based Medium Voltage labs, will provide Kempower with facilities to test and refine high-power charging systems.

“The FREEDM Center collaboration with Kempower is the beginning of an innovative and strategic relationship,” said Dr. Iqbal Husain, executive director of the center, adding that its work extends beyond EV charging to support broader electrification technologies.

University partnerships have become an important part of Kempower’s strategy to anticipate future technology and workforce needs. The company said the collaboration will help scale charging systems for trucking, construction, and marine sectors, where demand for high-power charging is growing rapidly.
