Joby Aviation has conducted its first demonstration of eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) air taxi technology in Japan, following a major $500 million investment from Toyota. The test flight, performed without a pilot onboard, took place at Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Shizuoka, showcasing Joby’s progress in sustainable air mobility against the scenic backdrop of Mt. Fuji.
Toyota has been a strategic partner for Joby since 2019, providing not only substantial funding but also technical support as the eVTOL company prepares for high-volume production in the United States. With Toyota’s engineers working alongside Joby’s team, the partnership aims to streamline manufacturing processes and build out production capabilities as Joby targets commercial eVTOL operations by 2025.
The recent flight event, attended by Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda, key company executives, and representatives from Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau, highlighted the eVTOL’s ability to transition smoothly from vertical takeoff to horizontal flight. This international debut marks a major step forward for Joby’s vision of clean air travel, aligning with Toyota’s broader mobility goals.
With Toyota’s increased financial commitment, Joby plans to advance its manufacturing and regulatory efforts, setting the foundation for eVTOL air taxi services. The companies remain committed to making sustainable air travel accessible, positioning Joby at the forefront of this emerging technology.
