As a form of commitment to provide a variety of emission-free commercial vehicles, Iveco has now designed a bus equipped with hydrogen fuel cell power for the European market.
However, the Italian manufacturer admits that its future bus will use Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell system known as the HTWO system. The system has been launched since the end of 2020.
Domenico Nucera, President of Iveco Group’s Bus Business Unit said that the plan to restart bus production in Italy would offer another opportunity to build buses with Hyundai’s HTWO fuel cell technology.
“By collaborating with industry leaders such as HTWO from Hyundai, which has more than 20 years of experience in hydrogen fuel cell technology, we at Iveco Bus are able to respond quickly to customer demands for zero-emissions vehicles powered by state-of-the-art propulsion technology.” , Monday (18/7/2022).
Previously, Iveco Bus had participated in a European tender for the submission of a fuel cell power bus with HTWO technology which is a facility of Hyundai’s global fuel cell business. In June, Iveco had announced plans to resume bus production in Italy. Meanwhile, Iveco’s factory in Foggia will, among other things, assemble battery buses and fuel cells.
“We have already started public tenders for hydrogen-powered buses and will continue in the coming months as we continue to play our leading role in the energy transition of Europe’s mass passenger transport segment,” explained Nucera.
On the other hand, collaboration with Italian manufacturers in this field is also Hyundai’s goal in expanding the supply of HTWO technology to other companies. The fuel cell system has also been used in every Hyundai hydrogen electric vehicle (FCEV).
In March, Hyundai and Iveco also agreed to explore possible cooperation on joint vehicle technology, co-procurement and co-supply, including powertrains and electric platforms and hydrogen fuel cell systems.
