Iveco, the commercial vehicle manufacturer, has revealed plans to introduce a new battery-electric commercial vehicle in European markets, set to be unveiled at the IAA Transportation event in Hanover, Germany, in September 2024.

The vehicle will be based on a global battery electric vehicle (BEV) architecture with a gross vehicle weight ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 tons, utilizing a platform supplied by Hyundai Motor Company.

Under the collaboration, Hyundai will provide Iveco with the chassis cab for the model, which will be completed and exclusively distributed by Iveco in Europe under its brand.

The partnership signifies a strategic move into the BEV segment, building on the previous collaborations between the two companies, which included the hydrogen-powered Iveco eDaily FCEV van and the E-Way H2 bus.

While specific details about the new electric commercial vehicle platform remain undisclosed, Hyundai’s previous announcement in March 2022 hinted at the development of a Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) based on the “Integrated Modular Architecture” (IMA). The IMA, expected to launch in 2025, is designed to be adaptable for use not only in passenger car models but also in light commercial vehicles.

The collaboration aims to address the growing demand for electric commercial vehicles in urban and suburban distribution and delivery operations in Europe. Iveco, which already offers the battery-electric eDaily in its portfolio, anticipates the new model’s debut to contribute significantly to the European light commercial vehicle market’s shift toward a carbon-neutral future.
