Isuzu Motors has unveiled the seventh generation of its N-Series truck, also known as the Elf in Japan, which includes significant upgrades such as advanced safety features not seen before in a Japanese light-duty truck, and an electric version that marks a first for the automaker.

Design-wise, the Elf has taken inspiration from its passenger truck cousin, the Isuzu D-Max, with a similar grille, and vertical headlights that mimic the brand’s twin-bar logo. The interior has also been updated, with a focus on driver comfort and fatigue mitigation.

To improve the truck’s efficiency, Isuzu has introduced the newly-designed Isuzu Smooth Intelligent Transmission (ISIM), a 9-speed dual-clutch transmission that reportedly enhances fuel economy when paired with the 4JZ1 diesel engine. The ISIM’s dual-clutch structure enables quick shift changes and reduces torque loss and shift shock during gear shifts, while the gearbox is claimed to keep RPMs low for improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise.

In terms of safety, the Elf features advanced driver assist systems, including a pre-collision braking system, blind-spot monitoring system, and a full-speed range adaptive cruise control. Isuzu claims that the Elf truck includes nine new safety assist features that are first in a Japanese light-duty truck.

Most notably, Isuzu has also introduced its first mass-produced Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) in the form of the Elf BEV, which the company says will accelerate the implementation of commercial BEVs globally. Up to five battery packs, each with 20 kWh capacity, can fit into the Elf EV, although the range has not been specified.

The updated Elf range will be available in Japan this year, with the F-Series set to launch in the summer. Pricing in Japan starts at 6,481,200 Japanese yen (including taxes) or around $47,200 at current exchange rates. Isuzu’s latest generation of the N-Series truck marks a significant step forward for the automaker, as it continues to push the boundaries of vehicle technology and design.
