Ionity Surpasses 600 Charging Parks Across Europe, Plans Expansion to 1,000 Locations

Ionity has achieved a significant milestone by establishing 600 charging parks across Europe. These parks are equipped with a total of 3,382 High Power Charging (HPC) points, with an additional 96 parks currently under construction. Ionity’s expansion is set to continue, with plans to surpass 1,000 locations in the coming year, totaling 7,000 charging points.

Founded in 2017 as a collaboration between BMW, Ford, Mercedes, and the VW Group (represented by Audi and Porsche), Ionity has since attracted new shareholders, including Hyundai and BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure Platform.

The company initially focused on establishing 400 locations with four to six charging points each. However, a strategic shift in 2021 led to the development of charging parks not only along motorways but also near urban centers and busy roads, with new locations featuring six to twelve charging stations from the outset. Each station is capable of delivering 350 kW, with no power sharing practiced.

In a move similar to EnBW’s strategy with covered fast-charging hubs, Ionity is acquiring its own plots of land, actively seeking sites of 500 to 3,000 square meters, and larger areas as well. These sites should accommodate at least 12 charging bays and related hardware, ideally with access to existing services such as petrol stations, cafes, shops, and restrooms, and be easily accessible from motorways or main roads.
