Hyundai Motor America announced robust sales figures for the month of September, showcasing a notable uptick in its performance in the United States automotive market. The company reported a total of 68,961 vehicle sales for the month, marking a substantial 16 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Furthermore, the year-to-date results displayed a commendable 13 percent year-over-year growth, totaling 595,147 units.

One of the highlights of Hyundai’s success story is its strong performance in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. The Korean automaker’s EV offerings, based on the Hyundai E-GMP platform, notably the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, have exhibited remarkable growth rates and nearly achieved a new monthly sales record.

During September, Hyundai recorded sales of 5,623 units for the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 combined in the US market. This represents an astounding 331 percent increase compared to the previous year and accounts for 8.2 percent of the company’s total sales volume. Among these models, the Ioniq 5 stands out as the best-selling all-electric Hyundai, with 3,958 units sold, while an additional 1,665 units of the Ioniq 6 found their way to eager customers.

In addition to the Ioniq duo, Hyundai’s electric vehicle lineup also includes the Hyundai Kona Electric (whose individual sales figures are not available as they are combined with the internal combustion engine Kona), plug-in hybrid models like the Santa Fe PHEV and Tucson PHEV, and the hydrogen fuel cell-powered Nexo.

For the Ioniq family, the numbers tell a compelling story of growth. In September alone, sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 increased by a remarkable 203 percent, while the recently introduced Ioniq 6 made a strong market debut. Cumulatively, the Ioniq family achieved sales of 5,623 units, representing an outstanding 331 percent year-over-year growth and securing an 8.2 percent market share.

The third quarter of the year proved to be highly successful for the Ioniq 5/Ioniq 6 combination, with sales totaling 16,738 units, a substantial increase from the 4,800 units sold during the same period last year, which included only the Ioniq 5 model.

Year-to-date figures reflect Hyundai’s sustained EV growth, with more than 33,000 Hyundai Ioniq 5/Ioniq 6 units sold in the US market, marking an impressive 82 percent year-over-year increase. It’s noteworthy that the Ioniq 6, introduced this year, was not available in the previous year’s sales data.

While these figures highlight Hyundai’s electric success, it’s important to note that the official statistics do not encompass the sales results of other all-electric or plug-in hybrid models, as they are reported alongside conventional or non-rechargeable hybrid models.

In contrast, Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell model, the Nexo, saw 16 units sold in the past month, reflecting a 41 percent year-over-year decrease. Year-to-date sales for the Nexo amounted to 173 units, representing a 54 percent decrease compared to the previous year. These figures provide valuable insights into Hyundai’s evolving position in the evolving landscape of electric and alternative fuel vehicles.
