Hyundai Motor America achieved a milestone in December with a record-breaking sales performance in the United States. The company reported 75,164 vehicle sales, marking a 4.3% year-over-year increase and signaling the 17th consecutive month of growth, culminating in the best December ever for the brand. In the entirety of 2023, Hyundai sold 801,195 vehicles, reflecting a robust 10.6% growth compared to the previous year.
A standout contributor to this success was the significant surge in the all-electric car segment, which experienced a threefold increase last month, constituting over 7% of Hyundai’s total volume.

Sales of Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) based all-electric cars, namely the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, reached 3,261 and 2,056 units, respectively, totaling 5,317. This remarkable performance marked a remarkable 209% increase year-over-year, and the share of E-GMP battery electric vehicles (BEVs) within Hyundai’s total volume improved to 7.1%, compared to a modest 2.4% a year ago.
The Ioniq 5 exhibited a robust 90% increase in sales year-over-year, while the newly introduced Ioniq 6 contributed an additional 2,056 units. The overall progress of these two models underlined the strength of Hyundai’s electric vehicle lineup.
Although specific numbers for the Hyundai Kona Electric were not provided, as it is counted alongside the internal combustion Kona, it is acknowledged as part of Hyundai’s contribution to the growing electric mobility market.
During the fourth quarter of 2023, Hyundai’s E-GMP-based electric car sales reached 13,293 units, marking a substantial 196% increase compared to the same period a year ago, constituting 6.5% of Hyundai’s total volume.

In the annual summary, nearly 47,000 units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 were sold in the U.S. This impressive figure accounted for a 104% year-over-year increase, indicating a substantial 6% share of Hyundai’s total sales. Additional contributions from the Kona Electric were presumed to further bolster Hyundai’s electric vehicle market presence.
While specific data for other plug-in models, including the Santa Fe PHEV and Tucson PHEV, were not detailed, both models exhibited strong year-over-year growth in December, with increases of 3,205% and 8,455%, respectively.
The hydrogen fuel cell model, Hyundai Nexo, reported 25 units sold in December and a total of 241 deliveries in 2023. This figure represented a 41% decline compared to the previous year, indicating varied trends within Hyundai’s diverse vehicle lineup.
