Hyundai Motor has made a significant move into the commercial electric vehicle (EV) market by revealing its new “ST1” EV business platform. This platform marks the debut of several upcoming electric models tailored for commercial use, signaling Hyundai’s intent to expand its electric vehicle portfolio beyond passenger cars.

Following a record-breaking year in which Hyundai sold 268,785 electric cars, the company is now venturing into the commercial sector with its new ST1 EV business platform.

The ST1, or Service Type 1, platform is designed to accommodate various services and solutions. A Hyundai Motor official described the ST1 as “a business platform with a variety of expansion possibilities,” indicating that while the initial focus will be on logistics and delivery, the platform can be adapted for various purposes in the future.

The ST1’s design prioritizes safety and practicality, featuring a semi-bonnet design that extends forward from the cab to provide additional space in the event of a collision. Black protectors have been added to the front bumper, side skirts, and rear door trim to prevent scratches, while lower ground clearance makes loading, unloading, and parking easier. A streamlined roof spoiler connecting the cab and cargo compartment enhances aerodynamics.

Hyundai’s initial ST1 models will include a Cargo and Cargo Refrigerated model, specifically tailored for logistics and delivery purposes. The company is already collaborating with “major domestic distribution companies” during the development phase to ensure that the ST1 meets their requirements.

The final specifications and prices for Hyundai’s new EV business platform will be revealed in the first half of the year, with sales set to begin in South Korea. Sister company Kia is also planning to enter the commercial EV market with its customizable Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV), suitable for various business and personal applications.

Hyundai and Kia are set to compete with other major automakers such as Ford, Rivian, GM, and Stellantis, all of which are increasing production of commercial EVs.
