Hyundai Motor has announced plans to expand its partnership with General Motors (GM), focusing on the development of electric vehicles (EVs) and the North American commercial vehicle market, under the current U.S. administration.

The South Korean automaker’s Chief Financial Officer, Lee Seung Jo, shared that Hyundai is exploring the possibility of re-badging its commercial EVs to supply GM. “We are considering re-badging our commercial EVs and supplying GM… The deal will pave the way for our entry into the North American commercial vehicle market,” Lee said.

The partnership follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in September 2024, which aims to explore new opportunities in electric vehicle production, supply chains, and clean energy technologies.

Hyundai and GM are working toward finalizing binding agreements on parts procurement, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles by the first quarter of 2025. However, Hyundai has acknowledged potential risks associated with U.S. trade policies, particularly under President Trump’s administration.

Specifically, the company is concerned about the impact of proposed import tariffs on its operations, although it expects Japanese automakers to be more affected by such policies.

Despite predicting that commercial EV sales growth may slow in 2025, Hyundai is working to mitigate any potential challenges by localizing production in the U.S. This includes the ongoing development of its new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia. “We expect more business uncertainties this year than ever due to potential policy changes not just in the home market but also in the U.S., while there will be tougher emission rules in Europe,” Lee added.
