Huawei and Chinese automaker Chery have launched the Luxeed R7, a new all-electric coupe SUV aimed at competing in the mid-size SUV market, particularly challenging Tesla’s Model Y. The Luxeed R7 was unveiled during Huawei’s fall product event as the second model under the Luxeed brand, following the Luxeed S7 sedan, and marks the first SUV under Huawei’s HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) business.

The Luxeed R7, built on Huawei’s Giant Whale 800 V high-voltage platform, is offered in four variants, with prices ranging from RMB 259,800 ($36,940) to RMB 339,800. The model targets a similar price range to the Tesla Model Y, which currently starts at RMB 249,900 in China. Pre-orders for the Luxeed R7 began on September 10, and within two weeks, over 30,000 pre-orders were received, according to Huawei.

Despite its competitive positioning, Huawei acknowledged the model would incur initial losses. “At least for this year, selling the Luxeed R7 is money-losing, bringing in a loss of around RMB 30,000 per unit,” said Richard Yu, Huawei’s managing director and chairman of the smart car solutions business unit. He added that profits are expected to emerge once deliveries ramp up.

The Luxeed R7 features advanced driver assistance technology, including Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 system, which uses end-to-end AI for an enhanced autonomous driving experience.
