Enedym Inc., a Canadian developer of next-generation switched reluctance motors (SRMs) and electric powertrains, has received a strategic investment from Honda Motor Co., Ltd., marking a significant step toward advancing rare earth-free electric motor technologies.
The investment, made through Honda Xcelerator Ventures, the automaker’s global open innovation program, will help Enedym accelerate the commercialization of its patented SRM technology and expand its operations. Enedym’s approach eliminates the need for permanent magnets and rare earth materials, addressing both cost and environmental concerns associated with conventional motor designs.

Headquartered at McMaster Innovation Park in Hamilton, Ontario, Enedym’s technology stems from over 70 patents developed by Dr. Ali Emadi and his research group at McMaster University’s Automotive Resource Centre. The company’s proprietary motor configurations and control systems aim to overcome traditional SRM limitations by improving performance, reducing noise, and optimizing efficiency.

Honda’s Managing Executive Officer, Manabu Ozawa, said the automaker sees strong potential in Enedym’s magnet-free design. “Most electric propulsion motors today use permanent magnets made from rare earth metals, which are expensive and environmentally challenging. Enedym motors do not use any permanent magnets, and Honda has high hopes for its potential,” he said.
The collaboration underscores Honda’s continued focus on sustainable innovation as it transitions toward electrified mobility. By supporting rare earth-free motor development, the company aims to diversify its EV supply chain and reduce dependency on critical materials.
