Grupo Bimbo, one of the largest baking companies in the world, has taken a significant step towards achieving its sustainability goals by ordering seven electric trucks from Scania. Once the vehicles arrive in Mexico, they will form Scania’s first electric fleet in Latin America, marking a significant milestone for both companies.
Grupo Bimbo has opted for Scania’s 25P B4x2 rigid electric trucks, which have an output of 230 kW and battery capacities of 165 and 300 kWh for ranges of up to 250 kilometres. Scania has not yet disclosed which option Grupo Bimbo will receive, but according to the company, the e-trucks will be used on urban routes and have a permitted payload of 11.5 tonnes.

This order comes after Grupo Bimbo successfully completed a trial in 2022 using the same truck, which produced “positive results” in terms of range and performance. As a result, the company wants to have 4,000 electric vehicles in operation by the end of 2024 and is also developing its own delivery vehicles with electric drives.
Meanwhile, Scania México aims to convert 10% of its vehicle range to electric vehicles by 2025 and reach 100% by 2050. “Both companies are gradually approaching our common goal of reducing the polluting emissions of our vehicles to 20% of their 2015 level by 2025 and keep going until we reach zero carbon emissions, in alignment with our commitment to the Science-Based Targets initiative,” said Alejandro Mondragón, CEO of Scania México.
Grupo Bimbo is implementing a sustainability strategy and claims that more than 80% of the electricity it consumes now comes from renewable sources. The company is also building “ecological sales centres,” with 15 locations in Mexico already equipped with solar panels, rainwater collection systems, green walls, natural lighting, and emission-free vehicles.

The move towards electric fleets is a critical step for companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute towards a more sustainable future. With Grupo Bimbo and Scania leading the charge in Latin America, we can expect to see more companies follow suit as they look for ways to achieve their sustainability goals.
