Gridserve, the UK electric vehicle (EV) charging network, has introduced ABB E-mobility’s new A400 fast charger, with the first unit now operational at the Centaurus Park charging hub in Bristol.
The ABB A400 charger delivers 400kW of ultra-rapid charging power and features two CCS charging ports with dynamic power sharing. Gridserve confirmed that this functionality allows the 400kW capacity to be modulated between two vehicles based on their respective charging needs, providing compatible EVs with up to 100 miles of range in less than 10 minutes, depending on usage.

Gridserve’s Chief Customer Officer, Rebecca Trebble, emphasized the company’s focus on driver convenience and reliability.
“Our goal has always been to make EV charging easy and as dependable as filling up your car with petrol or diesel,” said Trebble.
The A400 unit features a 32-inch touchscreen interface designed to streamline the charging and payment process. Operationally, Gridserve’s Innovation and Operations Centre (GIOC) provides 24/7 remote monitoring for the charging towers, supported by an in-house roadside patrol team for physical fault resolution.
Bruno Bourguet, ABB’s Head of Europe Region and Channels, stated that the charger was engineered to address key industry challenges.

“Gridserve’s deployment of our latest A400 charger marks a milestone for UK drivers. The A400 has been built from the ground up to bring reliability, scalability and performance to EV charging. With its intuitive design, including an award-winning user experience and interface, it sets a new benchmark for easy-to-use and easy-to-operate charging,” said Bourguet.
The introduction of the new charging technology follows a fundraising round earlier this year where Gridserve secured over £100 million in equity investment from its institutional shareholders, including TPG, Infracapital, and Mitsubishi, to accelerate the expansion of its High-Power Charging (HPC) infrastructure across the UK.
