In a strategic move to further solidify its international footprint, Great Wall Motor has made a significant entry into the Indonesian automotive market. The Chinese automotive giant unveiled its GWM brand at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) on August 10, showcasing a range of models that encompassed the Tank 500 HEV, Haval H6 HEV, Haval Jolion HEV, and Ora Funky Cat.
This step marks a continuation of Great Wall’s expansion into the ASEAN automotive arena, affirming its commitment to offering environmentally-conscious and technologically-advanced vehicles to a broader global audience. A press release issued by the company yesterday emphasized the company’s dedication to providing smarter and more sustainable transportation solutions for its growing international customer base.
Indonesia becomes the ninth country within the ASEAN region to welcome Great Wall’s presence, following the automaker’s successful entry into markets like Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
To celebrate this milestone, a launch event was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, on August 2, where Great Wall introduced the GWM brand to Vietnamese consumers and unveiled the impressive Haval H6 HEV.
Recent data released by the company highlights Great Wall’s remarkable performance in the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector. In July, the company reported a remarkable 163 percent year-on-year increase in NEV sales, with 28,896 units sold compared to 10,994 units during the same period last year. This achievement also marked an 8.35 percent increase from June, with 26,643 units sold. Impressively, the January-July period saw Great Wall’s NEV sales reaching a total of 121,965 units, reflecting a substantial 64 percent growth compared to the previous year.
Notably, Great Wall is not the sole Chinese automaker venturing into the Indonesian market. Neta Auto, a burgeoning Chinese electric vehicle (EV) startup, also made its presence known at the GIIAS exhibition. The company revealed three distinctive EV models that captured the attention of Indonesian attendees. These models were made available for reservation during the event, with official sales scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter.
As the Indonesian automotive landscape welcomes these new entrants, industry observers anticipate heightened competition and increased consumer choice, further propelling the nation’s transition towards greener and more innovative transportation options.
