Chinese automaker Geely has officially launched its next-generation Leishen AI Hybrid 2.0 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, claiming a segment-leading thermal efficiency of 47.26%. The upgraded system, which includes variants dubbed EM-i, EM-P, and a hydrogen-powered option, aims to rival and potentially surpass established hybrid systems such as BYD’s DM-i.
Geely introduced the first-generation Leishen hybrid in 2021, pairing a 1.5-liter engine with 43.32% thermal efficiency and a three-speed DHT gearbox. The updated 2.0 version builds on that foundation with a more efficient internal combustion engine, combined with AI-based control systems designed to improve powertrain performance and extend battery life. Geely reports a 15% battery life extension due to optimized current control via these algorithms.
The EM-i variant of the new powertrain, matched with a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine, will debut in the Geely Galaxy A7 sedan. This model boasts a fuel consumption of 2.0 liters per 100 km and a total driving range of up to 2,100 km. The Galaxy A7 is expected to enter the Chinese market in the second half of 2025.
Geely’s EM-P system, meanwhile, will offer a turbocharged internal combustion engine with all-wheel drive capabilities. It will debut in the full-size Galaxy M9 SUV, which is equipped with a hybrid setup supporting a 1,500 km range, 4.8 L/100 km fuel efficiency, and a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds. The SUV will also launch in China later this year.
In addition to the EM-i and EM-P variants, Geely announced plans for a hydrogen-powered version of the Leishen AI Hybrid 2.0. This version will feature an engine with an even higher thermal efficiency of 48.15% and is scheduled to power both a sedan and an SUV in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Geely’s move to expand its hybrid lineup reflects growing competition in the Chinese PHEV sector, particularly as local automakers race to push thermal efficiency benchmarks and incorporate AI-based enhancements to further distinguish their offerings.
