Foxconn will hold a seminar in Japan on April 9 to present its electric vehicle strategy, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said, as the Taiwanese contract manufacturer looks to strengthen ties with Japanese automakers following a recent deal with Mitsubishi Motors.

The event aims to enhance automakers’ and suppliers’ understanding of Foxconn’s EV ambitions, one source said. Chief EV strategy officer Jun Seki, a former Nissan (7201.T) executive hired in 2023, is expected to speak at the seminar, the source added. Both sources requested anonymity as the plans have not been made public.

Foxconn declined to comment on the event and the Mitsubishi deal, which marks the company’s first Japanese contract under its Contract Design and Manufacturing Service (CDMS) division. The agreement represents a shift in Japan’s auto industry as it faces increasing competition from Chinese EV makers such as BYD.

The seminar follows reports that Foxconn secured a contract to manufacture EVs for Mitsubishi, targeting markets in Oceania, including Australia. Mitsubishi said it continues to explore collaboration opportunities with various partners. “This tangible order signifies recognition of Foxconn’s manufacturing capabilities in the highly experience-driven automotive industry,” said Trendforce analyst Caroline Chen.
