Formula E will debut in-race fast charging during the Saudi Arabia E-Prix on February 14-15, 2025, adding a new tactical element to the championship. The “Pit Boost” feature will allow drivers to recharge their cars during a pit stop, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of electric racing.

Initially announced in 2022, the Pit Boost system faced delays to ensure reliability under high-pressure race conditions. With the system now deemed ready, race cars can recharge 10% of their energy, or 3.85 kWh, through a 30-second, 600 kW fast charge in the pit lane. The process, including plugging and unplugging, will take 34 seconds, requiring teams to execute precision maneuvers.

“Pit Boost will challenge teams and drivers alike to make high-stakes decisions under intense pressure,” said Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer at Formula E. “The potential for dramatic overtakes, unexpected twists, and human ingenuity will elevate the excitement for our fans and showcase Formula E and the FIA’s relentless commitment to innovation.”

The feature will be mandatory in select races, with teams required to recharge one car under predefined conditions. The FIA will communicate minimum charge levels for Pit Boost usage 21 days before each race. This adds a layer of complexity to team strategy, complementing the existing Attack Mode and potentially reshaping race outcomes.

“Following a comprehensive testing programme, we are glad to once again be able to push the boundaries of electric mobility with the introduction of Pit Boost,” said Marek Nawarecki, FIA Senior Circuit Sport Director. “This pioneering new feature will add another strategic element to the sport, and underscores the FIA’s steadfast commitment to developing evermore advanced race-to-road technologies – an approach that is perfectly exemplified by the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.”
