In anticipation of the upcoming Pikes Peak Hill Climb on June 25, Ford has joined forces with STARD to introduce their latest creation, the SuperVan 4.2. While building upon the foundation of its predecessor, the SuperVan 4, this new iteration boasts significant enhancements aimed at extracting even greater performance from the colossal vehicle, despite a reduction in raw horsepower. Ford’s SuperVan serves not only as a competitive racer but also as a platform for research, showcasing the remarkable capabilities of an electric drivetrain.
Ford’s engineering team made a daring move by eliminating one of the SuperVan 4’s motors, resulting in a total power output of 1,400 horsepower, a reduction of 600 horsepower from the previous model’s impressive 2,000-horsepower rating. The SuperVan 4.2 now relies on three electric motors, with one situated on the front axle and two located at the rear. Powering the vehicle’s electric system are Li-Polymer NMC pouch cells, equipped with a remarkable 600-kilowatt regeneration braking capacity. Notably, Tesla’s regeneration braking operates at approximately 60 kilowatts, while the Porsche Taycan leads the industry with 290 kilowatts.
In preparation for the 2023 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Ford placed significant emphasis on refining the SuperVan’s aerodynamics to maximize efficiency. Like its predecessors, the rear section of the cabin has been replaced with a streamlined, tear-drop-shaped panel to reduce resistance and turbulence. Complemented by spoilers and splitters, these modifications provide an impressive downforce of 4,400 pounds (approximately 1,995 kilograms) when the vehicle reaches a speed of 150 miles per hour (approximately 241 kilometers per hour).
The enhancements in aerodynamics, coupled with a reworked chassis and substantial weight reductions achieved through the utilization of carbon fiber, suggest a vehicle with exceptional control and agility. To witness the SuperVan 4.2 in action, enthusiasts can tune in to the Pikes Peak race on June 25, available for streaming on the Mobil1 YouTube channel. Notably, Romain Dumas has already claimed the top spot in the Open division qualifying results, setting a record-breaking time and showcasing the SuperVan’s formidable capabilities.
