Ford is recalling over 200 F-150 Lightning units due to a loose or missing retention nut on the high-voltage battery, which could increase the risk of a fire.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall notice affecting up to 216 F-150 Lightning units produced between October 31, 2022, and August 2, 2023. The issue involves missing or loose retention nuts on the high-voltage battery junction box bus bars, which could lead to electrical arcing and increase the risk of fire.

According to the defect notice, “Missing or loose retention nuts on the high voltage battery junction box bus bars in the high voltage battery pack may result in electrical arcing, which can increase the risk of fire.” It also warns that a “Stop Safely Now” message may appear in the instrument cluster, followed by a loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The problem originated from one or more retention nuts on the high-voltage battery junction box bus bars potentially being removed in error during a re-work operation. While the recall could impact up to 216 F-150 Lightning units, only an estimated 20 percent are believed to have the defect.

Owners affected by the recall are advised to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for inspection of the high-voltage battery junction box bus bars. The service will be performed at no charge. Dealers were notified on February 26, 2024, and owner letters will be mailed on March 18, 2024.

The NHTSA Recall number for this issue is 24V-144, and the manufacturer recall number is 24S11.
