After the success of the F-150 Lightning which is an electric version of the F-150, Ford is planning an electric variant for the smaller Maverick and Ranger pickup trucks.

To make this happen, Ford has registered the model names “Maverick Lightning” and “Ranger Lightning” with the European Trademark Office.

Meanwhile in the US, Ford goes by different names, Maverick Thunder and Ranger Thunder, according to the Electrek website. This is quite surprising because Ford previously used “Lightning” to refer to its electric pickups in the US. On the other hand, Ford has also registered the name “F-150 Thunder” which is likely for a different version of the model.

The Maverick is Ford’s smallest pickup truck that uses an internal combustion engine. The Maverick is 199.7 inches or 5.07 meters long, while the Ranger is 5.35 meters and the F-150 is 5.88 meters long.

Details regarding the development of the Maverick electric pickup truck are not yet available. Meanwhile, the electric Ford Ranger is reportedly being developed in conjunction with the electric version of the Amarok produced by Volkswagen.

Ranger has been positioned by Ford as a pickup truck for the global market. It is also likely to be built in South Africa, which has been the production base of the Ranger, as reported in April this year.

The Ranger is the only consumer pickup truck Ford offers in markets outside of North America. Meanwhile, the F-150 and Maverick were designed specifically for the North American market and are therefore also built and developed there.
