Ford is exploring the possibility of offering more affordable electric vehicles under its luxury Lincoln brand, CEO Jim Farley said, as the automaker rolls out a new platform aimed at lower-cost EVs.
Speaking to Hagerty, Farley said “an affordable EV Lincoln” would make sense, while noting that the brand is not yet ready to fully transition to all-electric models. He added, “The team really pushed me to have an all-electric lineup, and I refused to do it,” emphasizing that Lincoln’s future vehicles will likely include traditional gasoline models, hybrids, and extended-range EVs (EREVs).
Farley highlighted EREVs as a key option for the luxury brand, saying, “EREV would be a perfect drivetrain for us. All-hybrid and EREV lineup, and maybe a few electric cars, but more on the affordable side.” He also indicated that Lincoln models could feature “over-the-top color choice and over-the-top interior customization.”
Earlier this month, Ford introduced its EV Universal Platform at its Kentucky plant, designed to underpin a range of more accessible electric vehicles. Farley described the initiative as “a radical approach to a very hard challenge: Create affordable electric vehicles that delight customers in every way that matters.”
