Odys Aviation, a company developing hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicles, has signed an expression of interest (EOI) with Fiji Airways to provide flying vehicles for transporting medical supplies and cargo to Fiji’s islands.
The partnership aims to improve connectivity across the nation’s 330 islands, many of which face logistical challenges due to inadequate infrastructure.
The collaboration will focus on deploying the Odys Aviation Laila VTOL, a runway-independent aircraft capable of carrying cargo up to 400 miles. This capability offers the potential to establish emergency medical routes in the South Pacific that were previously inaccessible.
Additionally, Fiji Airways may use the VTOL to contract with logistics providers and government agencies to support broader operations in the region.
“This partnership will do more than just expand Fiji Airways’ commercial operations for today; it will drive our investment in the future of travel and lifestyle for the people of Fiji as well,” said Andre Viljoen, CEO of Fiji Airways.
Founded in 2019, Odys Aviation is based in Long Beach, California, and specializes in hybrid-electric propulsion systems. The Laila VTOL, designed to carry nine passengers and two pilots, is equipped with a combination of gas turbines and electric batteries. Odys recently partnered with Honeywell to develop ground control stations for drone operations, further expanding its capabilities in sustainable aviation.
“Our philosophy at Odys is to work in partnership with our customers and the regions in which they operate to deliver value beyond just aircraft,” said James Dorris, CEO and co-founder of Odys Aviation.
